UNDERGROUND SURVEYING

GEOPHYSICAL SURVEYS

Implementing a geophysical survey at the design & planning stage of your project helps identify and mitigate hidden health & safety hazards which could be faced by site teams and contractors. Understanding the site constraints at the earliest stage can also reduce remedial costs which can be substantial should these hazards be discovered later in the build programme.

Our geophysical surveys utilise non-invasive, high volume data capturing instruments, providing our clients with maximum data whilst maintaining minimal time and disturbance on site.

Geophysical surveys align closely with our other survey services, namely topographical, buried utilities and CCTV drainage condition surveys; offering clients a fully digitised & coordinated site constraints drawing and report prior to any remedial measures being undertaken.

Some examples of where geophysical projects can deliver value to a project include mineshaft cap monitoring, brownfield site foundation mapping, sheet pile tie positioning, void detection and steel reinforcement avoidance within concrete slabs and columns.

More recently we have completed work at an NHS Hospital where a large watermain ruptured beneath a car park. The ground was excavated and the watermain repaired however due to the volumes of water lost the Estates Department were concerned that the fines have been washed away leaving the potential for voids beneath the existing car park surfacing. The car park is used for both daily traffic and the large mobile MRI scanner therefore any voids pose a risk of collapse. Our geophysical survey provided a full understanding of the site condition.

We have also been commissioned to scan a large brownfield site in South Wales where existing buildings have been demolished to ground level. Our multi-array ground penetrating radar technology will map and locate the extent of historic foundations which were not removed during the initial demolition.

A geophysical survey can be used to locate a wide variety of targets, including…

  • Foundations & Buried Obstructions
  • Reinforcement Barring (rebar) Mapping
  • Post-tension Cable Mapping
  • Underground Storage / Fuel Tanks (USTs)
  • Bridge Deck Analysis
  • High Frequency Concrete Analysis
  • Road Construction Investigation
  • Void & Sinkhole Detection
  • Piles & Tie Rods
  • Cellars & Air Raid Shelters
  • Mine Workings
  • Depth to Bedrock

Underground Surveying Services

Location and tracing of underground utilities and buried services. Available as a standalone survey or as part of an integrated topographical or measured building survey.

To provide a full understanding of below ground site conditions and to confirm evidence of previous site use. Essential to complete prior to excavations, drilling, piling and many other construction processes.

Full range of high-pressure drainage solutions undertaken as a separate exercise or as part of a full CCTV condition survey and assessment.

Location and confirmation of the layout of structural reinforcement. A fast and efficient method of identifying voids in a variety of applications.

Remote inspections using state-of-the-art CCTV cameras to provide high definition visual imagery in pipes, voids and areas of restricted access.

Permanent identification of underground services assets to complement your utility survey. Effective and clear marking of the purpose of each inspection chamber.
